Christina May Carey

Christina May Carey is an artist working across photography, moving image, sculpture and installation. During the final trimester of Christinas' pregnancy, bathing has become a quiet ritual of connection. Through the warmth and stillness of an evening bath, she finds space to slow down, and care for her changing body. In this intimate portrait, Christina reflects on bathing as a moment of rest, presence and reflection.

"I enjoy making time for a bath in the evenings. My third trimester has fallen throughout Melbourne winter, and as my body has changed and new aches and pains have developed, a warm bath has become a simple but important way to unwind. It gives me a moment to slow down, connect with my baby growing inside me, and gently prepare my body and mind for rest and sleep.
“There’s something very comforting about creating a quiet space to care for both of us.”

Bathing while pregnant has become an important way to nurture my changing body. It’s a chance to slow down and acknowledge everything my body is doing, while also feeling connected to the baby growing inside me. There’s something very comforting about creating a quiet space to care for both of us."

I’ve cherished having the time to appreciate all that my body is going through and creating during pregnancy. Bathing has given me a quiet moment to acknowledge the incredible changes taking place and to feel connected to the little person growing inside me."
