Motherhood Series
Vol 14.
Kéti

BAINA's Motherhood Series is an exploration of bathing rituals, capturing the essence of motherhood in the bathing space. Encompassing moments of peaceful solitude and shared joy with a child.

By day, Kéti moves between engineering and freelance creative work, a rhythm she holds alongside motherhood. Within this contrast, her creative practice unfolds as a dreamy and poetic lens on still life scenes.

In this edition, Kéti writes while carrying her second son, his arrival imminent. Beside her is her almost two-year-old. She reflects on bathing as a space of enhanced intimacy with moments that feel both tender and transient as her child grows, how bathing has become layered when shared with the small body beside her, and the smaller body within, and how in the late stages of pregnancy, she is called back to water.

"I borrow space for bathing from the edges of the day. When my son is asleep and the house exhales, I slip into the quiet like it was waiting for me.

Lately, with my second son on the way — another body growing inside mine, it feels less like making space and more like being called back to it."

"Bathing is the only place where I feel the full weight and softness of my body at the same time. The water quiets the noise — internal and external. For a moment, I’m not needed in quite the same way. I can just be"

"Bathing used to be solitary — almost ceremonial in its stillness. Now it’s layered. There’s a small body beside me, and another within me. Bathing has become less about retreat and more about holding — myself, and them, all at once."

"I cherish the unguarded closeness of bathing with my child. The way he leans into me without hesitation, like I’m still his whole world. I’m aware it won’t always be this way, which makes it feel even more fleeting, more tender.

Bathing with my child feels like: being anchored and undone at the same time, smells like: damp skin, soap, and something quietly familiar, tastes like: the air before sleep, soft and slowing, sounds like: water against porcelain, small bursts of laughter, looks like: overlapping reflections, bodies folding into one another.
